Local Context
The issue of breast cancer treatment inequality connects to Chicago and other cities. No just because it’s Chicago, San Diego, New York Miami or what ever place it is doesn't mean cancer won't be there. Unfortunately cancer is a disease that by nature it self and genetics has evolved over time. According to HBOC is a Social Justice Issue (2013): “Researchers from the Sinai Institute last year analyzed breast cancer cases in the country’s 25 largest cities and found that African American women with Breast Cancer were on average 40% more likely to die of their disease than white women.” This shows how biological studies show the mortality rate of African american women with breast cancer and it’s not just a saying that breast cancer is a real issue. It gets scary when you find out that chicago is in those 25 top largest cities and those stats included us in that study. Biologically we certainly cannot stop breast cancer yet, but through research and awareness we can reduce the deaths or mortality rates of breast cancer.
In Illinois between 2006-2010 37,505 white females were diagnosed with cancer while 6,034 African American Females were diagnosed as well. There was also 282 white males and 58 African American males diagnosed with breast Cancer in Illinois(Cancer in Illinois,2014). Overall this shows that Cancer is affecting people locally, but mostly affecting females! Students can partner with local organizations to become activist-allies in addressing areas of concern by first advertising and letting people know about the issue. There is a lot of people who don’t know about this issue and it goes unaware of until an incident happens in the family or relatives. Making people more aware of this issue can unite more groups into fighting for a justified outcome. It is certain that we cannot fight for something and expect a good response right away because it takes struggle and dedication to actually stay and do something about this issue and to accomplish the goal we want.
I think that making small groups of people or students can help us begin the goal we want to achieve. We have to take baby steps in the beginning, to get to reach the goal we want. Since I have learned about the issue now it’s my turn to make people aware of it and see if they feel strong about it. Then we can unite with the groups that feel strong about making a difference with the issue to get together and join bigger organizations into their fight against this issue as well. After getting involved in the organization we can just contribute ideas to how we see it and how we think we can approach new ways out of the problem to make a solution that is reasonable. We have to think of an outcome that mostly everybody can agree on because we can’t work with differing points of view on whether what issue is best since we all are trying to achieve the same goal. We can come up with a reasonable solution that everyone can benefit from.
