Define the issue
The issue of breast cancer is not a new problem. According to Breastcancer.org - Breast Cancer Information and Awareness(2013) : “breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cancer cells. Overall it is mutations in genes and cells.” This suggests that breast cancer can create anyone as a victim. This is why its important that information about this topic gets to the public in an efficient way. This applies to the issue of social justice. The Risky Body Press(2014) states that, “lack of health insurance among low-income and self-employed women can be an obstacle to timely care a problem that may be eased if some of them gain health insurance.” For example, “Mary Singleton, 57 a Memphis print shop owner noticed a lump in her breast in July. Because she did not have health insurance, she did not get her lump checked, telling herself that she didn’t need to worry because she didn’t have family history of breast cancer. Through a mammogram through the local health department she learned she had stage 4 cancer” ( Parker-Pope, 2013)- If this is an issue which can affect anyone, how are women supported in annual checks or prevention? This illustrates how breast cancer is not a new problem, and because of its widespread effects, needs more attention. There is a disproportionate amount of mortality rates of African American women with breast cancer due to inequality in the provision of cancer treatment.
There is a lot of people who sometimes don’t know of the symptoms and as well go unchecked for months until it’s a bit too late. It is very unfair that the women are not getting the opportunity to get health insurance and they are more prompted to get breast cancer as they get older. In society it’s more known that women get breast cancer 100 times more often than in men. We also know that as women get older they are of a higher chance of getting breast cancer(What are the risk factors for breast cancer?, 2013). Overall I think breast cancer is more targeted at women since there has been more cases known about female breast cancer than men. This means that there is a higher rate of women dying than men due to breast cancer and lack of treatment. This is very unfair because everyone deserves to get treated and not get judged based on the financial need.
The issue of my Fire project is the inequality of breast cancer treatment among different racial groups of women. Not all the women get the same opportunities to get checked up or treated because of economic sustainability. I chose this issue because I feel really strong about health equality and it involves cancer that can affect anyone. I’m passionate about this issue because my aunt passed away from breast cancer. My aunt was not economically sustainable to get health checkups for example mammograms, and when she finally got one she discovered she had a malignant tumor on her breast. It was too late for my aunt to get treatment and within a couple of months she passed away. This issue matters because there is millions of people in this situation and people who don’t advocate won’t get a change. the more people we have advocating the better and faster we will resolve the issue. My goal for this project is to inform people about this issue because not many people seem to know about it. I also want to become part of an organization that helps people with these cases. This issue is important to me because its a big problem worldwide, not just here, but worldwide. Unfortunately my grandparents both passed away from cancer and not getting it treated on time. This situation hurted me and that is one of the reasons I want to go into the medical field for my post secondary plans. I know we can do something than just protests to get funding for low income people who need to get treatments and health care. Since, Cancer has been a genetic disease in my family it’s scary to know that i am the next generation in my family. My mother got diagnosed with ovarian cancer a couple months ago, I am scared for my sisters as well as for me to develop it since it can be genetic. This is important to other people because anyone can get cancer, no one decides who will get it. Cancer is among one of the diseases that kills a lot of people per year. I have lost my loved ones due to cancer and i am sure people have lost their loved ones due to cancer as well, i think its time to start funding for people to get treatment. Finally, we can wait to get treatment, but cancer won’t wait on us.
