National Context
To think globally and act locally means to think of the breast cancer treatment inequality issue on a broader view than just the national view. This way we can foresee the obstacles not just seen in the United states, but all over the world. Since my issue is a global issue it means that if there is groups all over the world fighting for equality among the issue the issue can be resolved. as stated before this is a social justice issue, a issue where there should be fairness and equality no matter any other factor, but that you’re human. There has been statistics shown where they state that about one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her life time, while in men its one in 1,000("What are the risk factors for breast cancer?", 2013). The trend that we see happening is that men are less likely to get breast cancer so they might not care about the issue as much as women. Also, about 40,000 women were expected to die in 2013 from breast cancer("What are the risk factors for breast cancer?", 2013). This shows that a lot of women are dying and there might be many reasons why they are and I am positive that not getting treated or diagnosed on time are some of the reasons why.
There is not necessarily a certain state on place where breast cancer is the main reason for deaths, the issue is distributed nationwide. According to Parker-Pope(2013):”Like many other African American women in Memphis and around the country,Ms.Reid learned about her breast cancer after it had already reached an advanced stage.” This was just one case in Memphis, but there is many others just as bad or worse than this. My aunt’s Carmens case was just one like this. My aunt went undiagnosed for years because she couldn’t afford to get medically checked and when she did she had a malignant tumor which then spreaded throughout her body. It makes me mad that this issue can tackle anybody and still nationwide it’s not heard of as much as prevention of smoking or not texting and driving ads on every corner in the city.
This issue has been fought by a lot of groups of activists. During the month of October there are certain health facilities that offer free mammograms for women. Even though that is an awesome thing to do the downfall for that is if the low income women do end up having breast tumors how will they get checked after october is over? how will they get the necessary treatment while not letting the issue of money get in the way? This issue also relates to the Obamacare act where people can get insurance under certain qualifications. People who have a certain wage range that is too high for national standards won't be able to get insurance and will have to purchase one. There is many people who get good money, but they have many debts to pay or children to take care of that the money they get is not enough for health insurance. This is many people's situation and many people as well just can’t afford a health insurance plan.
