Historical Context
Interestingly enough, the illness of breast cancer has been around since 1500 B.C. in Egypt (“History of Cancer,” 2014). This detail shows that the illness of breast cancer has been around since the longest. This also shows that breast cancer started at a different place other than the United States. It was well known that Egypt had a lot of scientists and yet to still know the first case of breast cancer was found in Egypt. After long years that this disease has been known there has been more and more research found on the illness, but the treatments do keep increasing through time.
In contrast to the societal view of usual victims of breast cancer, this illness affects men as well as women. The issue of breast cancer treatment inequality is not a new problem it remains as a threat to females as well as males. According Inequality of Breast Cancer (2013): “Double mastectomy was introduced in the 1990’s and is a standard test for oncology. The cost for a genealogy test is around $3,100.” This means that not everyone who wants to get tested for tumors like breast cancer will have the financial support to do it. This applies to the issue of social justice by people having to suffer from something before people actually start taking action about it. I had to get cancer to get health insurance,”Ms.Singleton said, a tear rolling down her cheek.”I’ve been one of those waiting for Obamacare waiting for health insurance.”(The Risky Body Press,2014). Many people believe that mammograms are bad but, “All I know is a mammogram saved my life” stated Brenda Stover (National Post Newspaper,2014). Stover found out she had a stage two breast cancer tumor and she got chemotherapy as well as surgery and she is now a cancer survivor. This shows that with the necessary support and financial need more people than just Stover can defeat cancer. If people find out about their health issues earlier then it will be better so they could start treatment right away, and the financial need shouldn’t be an obstacle.
According to Tackling a racial Gap in Breast Cancer Survival(2013): “Despite the 20 years of pink ribbon awareness campaigns and numerous advances in medical treatment that have sharply improved survival rates for women with breast cancer in the United States, the vast majority of those gains have largely bypassed black women.” This means that even though there has been years of cancer awareness there has still been cases that tackle the minorities just by biology and genetics. There is quite an unfairness already just by nature that minorities suffer and they can’t do anything about it, but treatment and awareness. An, example is stated in The Risky Body Press(2014) stating “Years of racial discrimination and distrusts of the medical establishment dating back to Tuskegee,Alabama syphilis experiments on black men in the 1930’s.” This means that people have been getting tested on and syphilis was one disease they tested on minorities. I think that this is very unfair because they were having the minorities as they were guinea pigs!
According to The History of Cancer(2014):”The world's oldest documented case of cancer hails from ancient Egypt, in 1500 b.c. The details were recorded on a papyrus, documenting 8 cases of tumors occurring on the breast.”This statement shows that this is not an issue of years ago, but more like centuries and decades back then. After all these years there is still no treatment for cancer. Also in Who Discovered the First case of Breast Cancer(2014)”It wasn't until the late 1700's when a connection between breast cancer and the swelling of lymph nodes was considered pertinent. In fact, two surgeons, French surgeon Jean Louis Petit and later the Scottish surgeon Benjamin Bell were able to remove a corresponding diseased lymph node along with it's cancerous tumor. Radical mastectomies were the norm even through the 1970's.” This statement shows that there has been research done all along through history, but it’s unfortunate that there hasn’t been a treatment found. there is millions of people in the medical field and thousands as well doing research, if that is one obstacle why make another barrier through economics? Women already have the disadvantage of being more prone to getting breast cancer and now its just nonsense that they can’t get treatment due to lack of money.
