Global Context
The issue of Breast Cancer is not a new problem today. This supports the fact that out of every two women getting diagnosed with breast cancer in India one is dying, as well as out of every four women getting diagnosed one woman is dying of it in China(Shah Sumeet,2012). Breast cancer is affecting people globally as well. According to Breastcancer.org - Breast Cancer Information and Awareness(2013): “White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than African American Women. However in women under 45, breast cancer is more common in african American women than white women.” Over all this means that African american women are more likely to die of breast cancer while asian, hispanics and native american women have a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer. This shows that any person with African American descendants is more likely to get breast cancer than white women. Breast cancer targets women specifically African Americans.
We all know that there is a diversity of people all over the world and that is the reason why breast cancer is a global issue.According to Global Comparison of Breast Cancer(2012):”for the first time now, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in India, way ahead of cervical cancer.” This shows that breast cancer is rising all over the world not just in the United States. This shows that as women get older overall their chances of developing breast cancer go up as well.(American cancer Society, 2014).As women get older they get physically weaker and are able to do less hard work, but if they develop breast cancer they have no choice just to get treatment .Because those of higher income do not face the same economic constraints, they are more likely to receive treatment in the comfort of their homes. According to National cancer Institute(2008):”...have found that SES[socioeconomic status], more than race or ethnicity, predicts the likelihood of an individual's or a group's access to education, certain occupations, health insurance, and living conditions—including conditions where exposure to environmental toxins is most common—all of which are associated with the risk of developing and surviving cancer.” This shows the clear inequality of how breast cancer treatment is unfairly given because depending if you have money or not will determine if you will be able to get treatment.
Not only is the United States of America suffering from this issue, but the whole world is. The differences in cancer risks are seen in industrialized countries that are between socioeconomically less and more favored population groups(Kogevinas,1997). This goes back to my main argument that breast cancer is a global issue. I think that breast cancer treatment inequality can be solved at a global level for the fact that every women with breast cancer deserves treatment. Why leave women untreated of a disease that is basically more likely to kill them within a certain range of time? There has been groups of people reaching out with campaigns to try to get this issue brought up to congress, but so far there has not been anything done about it. For example the Breast Cancer UK is a campaign that is trying to get congress attention to ban the use of BPA because it has been found to be a reason that causes cancer.(Breast Cancer UK,1999). Women, no matter of any color or race deserves to get the ability to cure their disease because we are all human, everyone around the world can suffers from this gender is not a barrier for cancer in this case.
Other issues that might be interconnected with my topic is Euthanasia and assisted suicide. Euthanasia is giving doctors a right to end the patients death because they are suffering and the patient desires to be put to sleep on a quick, compassionate death. When womens such as the low income who get no chance of getting breast cancer treatment are suffering i think they should have the right to decide their life path. We all know that malignant tumors of breast cancer means that cancer will spread throughout the body and the patient will die. If the issue of breast cancer treatment inequality is not getting resolved its linking with the euthanasia topic because why let a women suffer slowly and painfully? All this can be avoided if health facilities give the equal treatment to all people.
